BOCA RATON, Florida - NHL General Managers convened for the first of three days of meetings and picked up on a discussion that has been ongoing for the last few years and picked up traction the last time the group met back in Toronto in November: namely how to reduce the number of games that are decided in a shootout. “The shootout, theres nothing wrong with it, I think its an exciting part of the game but its just one small aspect,” said Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. “Its a skill exhibition. If you can get it back closer to regular hockey and have it decided that way; that would be my preference.” “I dont think its a knock on the shootout, I think more of the managers would like to see it end in overtime,” added Washington Capitals GM George McPhee. “Shootouts fun though, people like it, kids love it.” In 2011, 14.7% of games were not decided by the end overtime. While it fell to 13.5% in 2012, the number has been on the rise again, climbing to 14.1% in 2013 and 14.3% so far this season. Collectively, the sentiment among the group continues to trend towards the desire to see more games end in regulation or overtime but the methods to go about achieving that are being disputed. Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland has long been an advocate of featuring three on three play after five minutes of four on four overtime. While he pushed for it back in November, the concept appeared to have little support this morning. The problem is that because it occurs so rarely in games, its difficult to truly understand what impact it might have on the game before implementing it. “You see three on three for maybe a minute or forty five seconds and the one team might just be waiting to get their power play so they might attack a little bit differently than if it was a full two minutes,” said Blues GM Doug Armstrong. “To see it, you have to see it for the full two minutes with everyone at even strength.” So far, the ideas that appear to be gaining the most support are more subtle by nature, avoiding a drastic alteration in the game the way extending overtime or shifting to three on three would. Potentially changing ends to start overtime so that teams would have to stray farther from their own end to change as they do during the second period of regulation and doing a dry scrape of the ice after regulation instead of waiting until before the shootout seemed to pick up some traction. While it wouldnt be a radical difference, Stars GM Jim Nill pointed to the inclusion of the rule preventing players from changing after icing the puck prior to the 2005-2006 season as a subtle tweak that had a positive impact. “Its amazing how some little things can have a big impact,” Nill said. “Years ago if you would have said if you iced the puck and had to stay on the ice, everybody would have said its not that big of a deal. But it is a big deal. Its amazing how little things can change the game.” Sam Bradford Jersey . Campbell, playing on loan with Greek club Olympiacos, found the net with a left-footed shot in the 44th minute off a pass from second-half substitute Jorge Rojas to open the scoring at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica. Josh Rosen Cardinals Jersey . -- The Chicago Bears agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract with defensive lineman Israel Idonije and are bringing him back for a second stint. http://www.footballcardinalsmall.com/Youth-Josh-Bynes-Elite-Jersey/ . Asdrubal Cabrera had four hits and three RBIs, Michael Brantley also homered and the Indians beat the injury-riddled Minnesota Twins 9-4 Thursday for their first three-game winning streak this season. Custom Arizona Cardinals Jerseys . General Manager Sam Presti said the three-time All-Star had knee swelling that would not subside, and the procedure was intended to solve the problem. He said doctors determined that a loose stitch was to blame for the swelling, that Westbrooks lateral meniscus has healed properly and the procedure was successful. Chad Williams Jersey .com) - Pittsburgh Steelers running back LeVeon Bell, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Elvis Dumervil and New England Patriots punter Ryan Allen were selected as the AFCs top players for Week 14 of the NFL season.SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Sharks had little time to dwell on losing their lead before Joe Pavelski put them back ahead again.Pavelski scored less than a minute after Minnesota tied the game early in the third period, and Alex Stalock made 18 saves against his hometown team to lead the Sharks to their seventh win in eight games, 2-1 over the Wild on Thursday night. They had just got one, Pavelski said. We felt we were playing good. We couldnt revert to any other way. So we came out that next shift.Brent Burns also scored and Joe Thornton had two assists for the Sharks, who have won five straight at home after a slow start to the season at the Shark Tank.Christian Folin scored his first career goal to tie the game just 45 seconds before Pavelskis goal, and the Wild lost for the 10th time in their past 11 games in San Jose. Darcy Kuemper made 28 saves. When you give up a goal right after you score, it hurts, forward Zach Parise said. When you come up short, something is not good enough. After the teams combined for just one goal in the first 40 minutes, they each scored once in the opening 2 minutes of the third period.Minnesota struck first following a weak clearing attempt from Tommy Wingels that ended up right on Folins stick at the point. Folins blast got through a screen from Jason Zucker to tie it.But the Sharks answered quickly when Thornton set up Pavelski for a one-timer from the top of the circle that beat Kuemper. It was Pavelskis 15th goal of the season and sixth in eight games. Those two obviously have a connection, coach Todd McLellan said. Its a goal scorers goal. He shot it in stride. It wasnt in his wheelhouse but he still put it in the right spot.Stalock, a native of St. Paul, Minnesota, made the lead stand up in his first game against the Wild. His best save might have come llate in the third on a one-timer from Jared Spurgeon.dddddddddddd.There was traffic in front, Stalock said. He had one place to shoot it, I figured, where there wasnt any traffic. I got a push over a little late but got a piece of it. Luckily enough it stayed in front of me.The Sharks broke a scoreless tie late in the second period after Nate Prosser was sent to the penalty box for interference. Justin Braun fed Burns for a one-timer from the point that appeared to deflect off Spurgeons stick and past Kuemper.Despite getting only 14 shots in the first two periods, the Wild had plenty of chances earlier to get on the board but couldnt capitalize. Kyle Brodziak hit the post on an odd-man rush with Minnesota short-handed in the first period.Logan Couture then made a couple of big defensive plays to keep the game scoreless earlier in the second, deflecting a wraparound attempt by Thomas Vanek and breaking up a 2-on-1 chance by Parise with a strong backcheck. Spurgeon passed on a chance to shoot on that rush before his pass to Parise was broken up.That was the story of the game, Wild coach Mike Yeo said. Youre lucky enough to get one or two 2-on-1s and when we get four 2-on-1s and dont even get a shot off, thats the game.Stalock also made a good save on Jason Pominville later in the second as the Wild failed to convert on numerous odd-man rushes.NOTES: Thorntons two assists gave him 1,220 career points, moving past Jean Beliveau into 39th place on the NHL scoring list. ... Minnesota was without two defencemen with Marco Scandella serving the first game of a two-game suspension and Keith Ballard injured. ... San Jose D Matt Tennyson and F Chris Tierney were called up from Worcester with D Marc-Edouard Vlasic (upper-body) and Fs Mike Brown (lower body) and Matt Nieto (ankle) injured.
